The Great Big Green Week 2025

The "Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

During the week, communities, schools, businesses, churches, mosques and more join together in a wave of support for action to protect the planet.

Taking action to swap together for good shows our support for a safer, greener, fairer future."

Engaging in Community Activities for a Greater Cause

Here at our home, we dedicate an entire week to a series of carefully planned activities and themed treats, all designed to promote the important message of swapping. This initiative is not just about exchanging items; it’s about fostering a sense of community, sustainability, and collaboration. By engaging in these activities, we aim to illustrate how each individual can contribute to a larger movement, making a significant impact on our environment and society.

Themed Treats to Enhance the Experience

Complementing the activities, we offered a variety of themed treats that align with the swapping concept. For example, we provided sweet and savory treats in our cafe and at our afternoon tea time which were made with plant-based ingredients.

Building Community Connections

This week of activities is not just about the items being swapped; it’s about building connections within our community. We encourage participants to share their stories and experiences related to swapping, creating a dialogue that fosters understanding and camaraderie. By bringing people together, we are not only promoting sustainable practices but also strengthening the bonds within our community, making it a more cohesive and supportive environment.

Clothes Swap

During the week, we organized a vibrant and engaging clothes rail in our cafe, a thoughtful initiative designed to foster community spirit while promoting sustainability. This event encouraged staff members, residents, and their families to participate actively by bringing in clothes they no longer needed. The clothes rail served as a central hub where individuals could swap items, donate gently used clothing, or take home new-to-them pieces that caught their eye.

The concept behind this initiative was not only to declutter our own wardrobes but also to create an opportunity for everyone involved to give their items a new lease on life. Moreover, this event promoted environmental consciousness by encouraging the recycling of clothing and reducing waste. By rehoming items rather than discarding them, we contributed to a more sustainable approach to fashion, highlighting the importance of mindful consumption in our daily lives.

At the end of the week, any clothing that remained on the rail was not simply discarded; instead, it was carefully gathered and donated to a local charity. This ensured that the items would continue to serve a purpose, helping those in need within our community.

Reusing Plastic Butterflies from World Environment Day

Green Week 2025 was a pivotal event that took place immediately following World Environment Day, a day dedicated to raising global awareness about environmental issues and promoting actions that can help protect our planet. This timing was particularly significant as it allowed communities, organizations, and individuals to build upon the momentum generated by World Environment Day. During Green Week, we took the opportunity to showcase our remarkable plastic butterflies, which had previously served as eye-catching decorations. These butterflies were not just ornamental; they symbolized the potential for creativity in recycling and repurposing materials that would otherwise contribute to environmental waste.

Green Week 2025 was not just a celebration of recycling but a comprehensive campaign aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. By reusing our stunning plastic butterflies and engaging the public in meaningful conversations about recycling, we sought to create lasting change that extends beyond the week itself, encouraging ongoing commitment to sustainable practices in our daily lives.

WWF Animal Quiz

"At WWF we’re uniquely well placed to bring our world back to life. We’ve been protecting nature’s wonders for more than 60 years. And now we’re leading the way not just to protect our natural world but to restore it."

Engaging Residents in Wildlife Awareness through Quizzes

Residents took part in a quiz provided by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an organization renowned for its commitment to conservation and the protection of endangered species. This interactive quiz served not only as a fun activity but also as an educational tool aimed at raising awareness about wildlife and the diverse array of animals that inhabit our planet. Participants were presented with a variety of questions that spanned different topics related to wildlife, including species identification, habitats, conservation efforts, and the ecological challenges faced by various animals.

Understanding the Impact of Global Changes

The quiz provided a unique opportunity for residents to engage in meaningful discussions about how the world is changing due to factors such as climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution. As participants answered questions and shared their thoughts, they delved into the complexities of these issues, exploring how they directly impact wildlife populations and ecosystems. For instance, discussions might have touched on how rising temperatures affect migration patterns of birds or how deforestation leads to the loss of habitats for countless species.

Garden Maintainance

As well as all these new activities, we also made sure we were diligently looking after our beloved Garden, which serves as a vibrant sanctuary for both flora and fauna. To ensure the health and vitality of our plants, we established a regular watering schedule, paying close attention to the specific needs of each species.

In addition to watering, we took great care in removing weeds that threatened to compete with our plants for nutrients and space. We dedicated time to hand-pulling these invasive species, which allowed us to avoid the use of harsh chemicals that could harm the delicate ecosystem we were nurturing.

Furthermore, we focused on maintaining our flowers with special attention to deadheading, which involves removing spent blooms to encourage new growth and prolonged flowering. This practice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of our Garden but also plays a crucial role in attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. By creating a welcoming environment for these essential creatures, we supported the important process of pollination, which is vital for the reproduction of many plants and the overall health of our ecosystem.

Overall, our commitment to caring for our Garden extended beyond just the staff, residents have been taking ownership of the garden ensure we all have a great space to enjoy. Residents are proud of the work they do and gives them purpose in our home.
