World Environment Day in 2025 will focus on ending plastic pollution. The Republic of Korea will host the global celebrations.
For many years, plastic pollution has infiltrated every part of the globe, contaminating the water we drink, the food we consume, and even our bodies. Although plastic pollution is a significant issue, it is also one of the most solvable environmental challenges we face today, with several clear solutions available.
World Environment Day offers us advice on how to alter our daily lives:
Transition from disposable to reusable products.
Actively sorting waste and disposing into correctly labelled containers.
Ensuring plastic packaging is reused, recycled, and composted.
Using your voice and choice to let politicians know that you care about the plastic pollution issue and that they should too.
Moving away from purchasing over-packaged products.
World Environment Day - Plastic Recycling Project - Milk Bottle Butterflies
On World Environment Day 2025, we dedicated our efforts to the impactful #beatplasticpollution initiative, which aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic waste on our environment. In alignment with this global movement, we embarked on a creative project that involved crafting an extraordinary art piece using a common household item that many people often overlook: THE MILK BOTTLE.
Within our 90-bed residence, we have observed that we consume a substantial number of milk bottles on a regular basis. Traditionally, these bottles would simply be thrown away or placed in recycling bins, where they would eventually be processed, but often not in a way that truly minimizes their environmental impact.
By shifting our focus toward the principles of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle, we have taken a proactive approach to repurpose these plastic bottles, transforming them into stunning butterflies that now adorn our garden. This innovative project not only serves as a visual delight but also acts as a powerful reminder of the importance of reducing plastic waste in our daily lives.
Our team came together to brainstorm ideas and techniques for creating these butterflies, engaging in a hands-on workshop that fostered collaboration and creativity. We started by collecting a variety of empty milk bottles, carefully cleaning them to prepare for our artistic transformation. Each bottle was then cut and shaped into butterfly wings, with vibrant colours added through the use of non-toxic pens. The final result was a breath taking display of colourful butterflies that flutter in the breeze, symbolizing hope and change in our approach to plastic consumption.

We enjoyed this project so much that we have decided to continue it long-term. The positive impact it has had on our community and the enthusiasm it generated among participants have motivated us to extend our efforts. We aim to collaborate with one of our local schools as part of a multi-generational initiative designed to help educate the next generation about recycling and environmental stewardship.
This collaboration involves a series of workshops where students will engage in hands-on activities related to recycling, such as sorting materials, creating art from recycled items, and learning about the lifecycle of products. We believe that by integrating practical experiences with educational lessons, we can instill a deeper understanding of the importance of recycling and sustainability in young minds.
