Finding meaningful ways to slow down, engage the senses, and appreciate the natural world around us is at the heart of building a sustainable, eco-conscious community. During this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, we had the perfect opportunity to bring that passion to life, celebrating the wildlife right on our doorstep—and welcoming a few extra special feathered visitors along the way!
Here is how we spent our day honouring local wildlife, connecting with nature, and discovering new ways to appreciate the ecosystems around us.
Watching and Learning: Big Garden Birdwatch Fun
We kicked off the day with our eyes trained on the outdoors, spotting some vibrant local robins darting around the garden flower beds and bird tables. Observing local garden birds isn't just a relaxing pastime; participating in bird counts helps track local biodiversity and highlights the vital role urban and residential gardens play in supporting native wildlife.
After our morning birdwatch, we gathered in the bistro to keep the momentum going with a lively bird quiz and an engaging nature documentary. Even our resident cat couldn't resist joining in, happily perched in front of the screen to watch the birds on TV! It was a wonderfully uplifting morning that reminded us how simple moments in nature—even viewed through a window—can bring immense joy and connection.
Up Close with Wildlife: A Visit from Walks With Hawks
To make the celebration even more memorable, we were thrilled to welcome Walks With Hawks for a hands-on experience that brought the wonder of nature indoors.
Residents had the incredible opportunity to see these impressive birds of prey up close, learning about their habitats, behaviours, and the essential roles apex predators play in maintaining balanced ecosystems. Seeing the beauty, strength, and intricate detail of these raptors first hand was an unforgettable experience that sparked fantastic conversations about wildlife conservation and native species protection.
Why Local Biodiversity Matters
Events like the Big Garden Birdwatch remind us that sustainability starts at home. Supporting local wildlife doesn't require grand gestures; small, thoughtful choices make a world of difference for our ecosystem:
Keep Bird Feeders Stocked: Providing clean water and fresh seed—especially during colder months—helps native birds thrive when natural food sources are scarce.
Plant for Wildlife: Incorporating native shrubs, winter-berries, and pollinator-friendly flowers offers natural shelter and forage.
Create Safe Spaces: Leaving small, wilder patches in the garden gives insects and small creatures habitat to nest and shelter.
Bringing nature into our daily lives enriches our health and well-being while fostering a deep respect for the environment. A huge thank you to everyone who made our Big Garden Birdwatch celebrations so special—and to our friends at Walks With Hawks for bringing the magic of the wild right to our door! 🌿🐦💛
