🌿 Fixer Upper Campaign 🔧🪛
Sustainability Champion Lana and the Eco Warriors from our local school joined forces for a day of creativity and learning! Together, we explored new skills and shared ideas about caring for our planet. Residents and children worked side by side, teaching each other techniques and discovering the joy of making something by hand.
We created beautiful daffodil cushions that will brighten our home and a vibrant hedgehog house to provide a safe haven for wildlife in our garden. These projects weren’t just fun—they sparked conversations about how we can make both our home and school more environmentally friendly. 🌱
From upcycling materials to reducing waste, everyone contributed ideas on how small changes can make a big difference. It was inspiring to see generations come together, proving that sustainability is a shared responsibility—and a wonderful way to connect with each other.
During our workshop, the children inquired about how small actions can impact the environment. We discussed how every little effort contributes to significant change. Following this, one boy questioned why we were creating a home for a hedgehog and decorating it if the hedgehog wouldn't notice. These questions reflect their curiosity about our motivations.
We explained that hedgehogs appreciate warm spaces where they can hide and hibernate during winter, and by providing these spaces, we ensure their safety in our garden. The conversation then shifted to the purpose of decorating if the hedgehog can't see it. We clarified that the garden is a shared space for our residents, who enjoy vibrant colors and find joy in their outdoor environment. They truly appreciate seeing the children's artwork, which adds beauty to their surroundings.
The children seemed satisfied with this explanation, nodding in understanding. However, their curiosity didn't stop there. They wanted to know more about the different ways we could help other creatures in the garden. This sparked a lively discussion about planting flowers that attract bees and butterflies, building bird feeders, and even creating small ponds for frogs and dragonflies.
Excited by these ideas, we then went on to talk about our Biodiversity Winter Project and if they will come back to help us to some planting. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and soon everyone was talking about the different types of plants we were going to plant. By the end of the workshop, the children had not only learned about the importance of small actions but were also inspired to continue their efforts to protect and nurture the natural world around them.
Their dedication and creativity were truly inspiring, reminding us all that even the smallest hands can make a big difference when it comes to caring for our planet.
At Sandfields, we are deeply committed to our work with children and understand the importance of generational change. During our recent workshop, residents enthusiastically shared their love for sewing with the children, many of whom had not engaged in this craft for years but are now rediscovering it while teaching the next generation.
The children actively engaged in discussions about the significance of sewing as a valuable skill.
Residents fondly recalled the times they created clothing for their children and repaired items to prolong their use, underscoring the essential role these practices play in promoting sustainability.
The children were astonished when the residents mentioned how they once made clothes for them, noting how different things are today. While some younger children faced challenges with sewing, we reminded them that mastering a new skill takes time and that perseverance is key.
We also explored the distinction between being eco-friendly and sustainable. Many children were familiar with eco-friendly practices but not as much with sustainability, so we discussed actionable steps we can take to be more sustainable.
We encouraged them to think creatively about how they could incorporate sustainability into their daily lives, such as by upcycling old materials into new projects or choosing quality over quantity in their purchases. The workshop concluded with a collaborative sewing project, where both residents and children put together a daffodil cushion. These cushions symbolized the bond between generations and serves as a reminder of the skills and values shared during the workshop.
